English classroom teaching is a teaching procedure with communication. It notonly emphasizes the output of the language, but also the input of the language. Fromthe Swain’s language output theory, he thought, only if do the corresponding languageoutput after the language input, you will learn the accurate and fluent language withcomplete understanding. However, there are some students who don’t participate inclassroom questioning and teaching activities actively. They always keep silent in theEnglish classroom. Obviously, it’s not good for the teaching activities and the outputof the language. Besides, the Concept of New Curriculum highlights the all-rounddevelopment of every student. So, researching those silent students in Englishclassroom has important theoretic meaning and practical significance to thedevelopment of students and the teaching activities.The research on silence in English class is a new topic, most of researches in thedomestic theoretical are on the theoretical level and they put focus on the silence inHigher Education. There are very few researches on this in the English class of ruraljunior high school. Otherwise, the researches on the cause of students’ silence inEnglish classroom are general, which is hard to provide relevant strategies andsolutions. So, this research takes the305students and15teachers from Wuhe Schooland Duzhai School as the research objects, and uses classroom observation,questionnaires and interview as the major research methods. This research aims tosurvey the present situation of silence in the English class of rural junior high school,analysis the types of the silence, find out the cause of each type of silence, andexplore relevant strategies and solutions to negative silence in English classroom.From the analysis of survey database by the SPSS21, I get conclusions asfollows:Indeed, the silence in the English class of rural junior high school is a quiteserious phenomenon. There are three types of silence: Knowledge-based silence, passive silence, and active silence. And more than92.7%of the students think thesilence in English classroom is negative.The causes resulting in the silence are manifold, and the cause of different typeof silence is different,for example, the difficulty with learning English, the methodsof teachers’ teaching and responding, the lack of self-confidence of students, thestrong self-respect of students, and so on.Base on the survey and research, finally, this research proposes a fewcountermeasures as to teachers how to solve the negative silence in the English classof rural junior high school. The countermeasures contain: treating the student warmlyby the equality, renewing the teaching Ideology, changing the teaching methods,establishing the good teachers and students relations, and so on. And Expert somehelp to solve the negative silence in the English class of rural junior high school andto improve the class instruction of English.
