As a second language, the vocational school students can seldom get the chance to talk withnative speakers in their daily life, so that Class participation is very necessary for vocational schoolstudents. But with the increasing enrollment of senior high school, the students who want to go tovocational schools for further study are reducing, which leads to the fact that the vocational schoolstudents’ English knowledge, study attitude and habit are declining. The students do not want toanswer the teacher’s questions actively while having English lessons. Class silence means thestudents just keep silent when the teachers ask the students some questions or want the students toparticipate or cooperate in class. They do not discuss or communicate with others. Classroomsilence can be classified into positive silence and passive silence. The former can promote thelearning of English because the students are thinking, while the latter will affect the approach of theknowledge and skills in English learning and teaching, because the students are absent minded.Many domestic and foreign scholars, experts have studied classroom silence, but from thetheoretical level. This paper mainly focuses on an empirical study of the passive silence invocational English teaching.In order to integrate the phenomenon of classroom silence in vocational English class, thispaper investigates and analyses three key problems as follows.1. What are the situations about thephenomenon of classroom silence in vocational English class.2. What are the reasons that causethis phenomenon?3. What can we do to help the students participate in the class actively? Thepaper is divided into6chapters.The first chapter describes the research background, purpose and significance. The secondchapter introduces the literature review and theoretical basis, describes the research status at homeand abroad, and introduces the research method. It also gives the definition of the core concepts.The third chapter is the investigation status of the students in Secondary Vocational Englishclassroom silence. The fourth chapter Analyses the reasons on Vocational English classroomsilence. The fifth chapter investigates the strategies to the teachers and vocational schoolscombining the questionnaire, interview, classroom observation with her teaching experience. Itsuggests the teachers to use multiple evaluation model and pay much attention to the art of askingquestions so as to help the students to be confident. The teachers should try to set situational environment while teaching and penetrate professional knowledge in basic English Teaching toenhance the teaching effectiveness. It also suggests the vocational schools to encourage teachers ofEnglish to edit school-based textbooks and create the environment of using English out ofclassroom.
