In the 70's of the 20th century, commercial banks encountered intense shock again. A series of innovation of types of intermediary business make it become an important part to banks running. Intermediary business, assets business and liabilities business are regarded as three big pillar business of commercial banks. The Intermediary business means those do not form the assets, debts in the form of business bank, but forms the non-interest income of bank. From the development of the international banking business in the past 20 years, middle businesses have been given great regard because of it's non-requirements for capital, strong service, relatively high profit, relatively low risk, and get great development, have already exceeded the traditional loans and deposits business and become the main source for profits of bank. It has a lot of types, including traditional cleaning, agency business and emerging business such as credit card, information consulting, guarantee business and so on. In recent years, with the reform of China' s financial system and the development of its economy, Chinese commercial banks have paid more attention to the intermediary business, because they begin to realize its important role. They try to provide their customers with new services through continuous financial innovation. As a result, their intermediary business has improved a lot. However, compared with that of the banks of western countries, the intermediary business of Chinese banks is far behind in terms of both quality and quantity. As our country has joined WTO, the commercial banks of China are facing the keen competition from foreign banks. The intermediate business has been the focus that is fought for fiercely. At the same time, however, it is for a long time that the commercial banks of China have been devoted to assets and liabilities business. Intermediate business is a `bottleneck' of the development of Chinese commercial banks. So the development of intermediate business is essential to commercial hanks. This thesis has provided the theories of the intermediary business of commercial bank, presented the currently developing situation and trend of domestic and international commercial banks and provides some tentative suggestions about improving Chinese intermediary business. The thesis consists of four chapters: In the first chapter, the basic theories of the intermediary business are introduced, including the foundation and development of intermediary business, the concepts, classification, features, and the positive effects of the intermediary business. Because of it's non-requirements for capital, strong service, relatively high profit, relatively low risk, the intermediary business get great development and bring great profit to the commercial banks. Chapter two focuses on the comparison of the intermediary business between the Chinese commercial banks and foreign ones. In recent 20 years, the intermediary business in western countries has improved rapidly, which can be seen from the following: Expansion of the business scales, increment in income, abundant products, and advanced services tools. On the contrary, the intermediary business of Chinese commercial banks is much less developed: low business scales and low income, narrow business scopes and few products and less developed services tools. With the intense competition from the foreign banks after China's entry into the WTO, and because of the narrowness of profit abilities of the traditional asset management and liability management, it is necessary for Chinese commercial banks to develop their intermediary business.
