ChapterⅡ"Model Opera in the context of the Great Cultural Revolution", analyzes the theme and leading hero of The Red Detachment of Women by detailed reading. As a model opera carrying the political aspiration of the great Cultural Revolution, The Red Detachment of Women changed its theme and replaced its leading hero while it had completed the transformation of art form: re-established theme of "class struggle" making the main plot of struggle high to a "class" level by constructing the class relationships, which met the main melody of the Great Cultural Revolution perfectly; the Party delegate Hong Changqing who was promoted to the first protagonist also stressed his "lofty-great-perfect" image through the contrast of the negative role Nan Batian and the foil of positive role Wu Qinghua, and responded the call of the Great Cultural Revolution's arts policy strongly. Its extreme form had a deep-rooted inheritance and development. In a sense, this also explains further that the Model Operas were not just a direct projection of totalitarian politics. Under its monotonous artistic performance, there were some far more profound complexities.
