Translation And Acceptance

King Lear is one of the Four Great Tragedies of Shakespeare. Since Shakespeare entered China in the 1950s, different translators have translated them in different periods. Translation is not only the transformation of language, but the communication between different culture. Different translators have different interpretation and reproduction. Liang Shiqiu and Zhu Shenghao are two of the most representative translators. Their versions successfully reproduced Shakespeare's charm, representing 'elegant' and 'vulgar' style respectively. Reception aesthetics emphasizes translator's guiding position as a reader in the translating process, and the responsive effects of readers. They put forward that translation is the dialogue and fusion between the text and the translator. Translator can translate according to the reader's reception in order to adapt to the target languages receptors' psychology. The author of this thesis compares Liang's and Zhu's translation of King Lear in terms of sound, vocabulary, syntax and translation strategies, inquiring into the importance of readers' reception factors.It consists of three chapters: Chapter One 'Acceptance and reappearance of drama discourse 'explains the importance of translator's strategy and readers' reception according to the style of drama. Chapter Two 'Comparison of Liang's and Zhu's language style' analyzes the same and different strategies in sound, vocabulary, and syntax, with reference to the relation between the reader's reception and translation style. Chapter Three 'Readers' reception and translators' strategies' analyzes the foreignization and domestication strategies adopted by the translators, and their reception by the readers and critics, illustrating that readers' reception has effect on translation strategies and reflected the importance of readers' reception.
