All the things in the world are developing and changing, and translation is not an exception of it. During different time, different translation versions for the same original work would appear. They have their own characteristics. Different versions, especially those appeared before or after great social changes, have greater differences with one another. This thesis would choose three different translation versions (Mr. Lin Shu's, Mr. Zhu Shenghao's and Mr. Bian Zhilin's) for Shakespeare's famous tragedy King Lear of different times as examples, and compare them on the aspects of style, language, translation of figure of speech, translation of cultural elements, the choices of translation methods and translation of the theme. It would also discuss about the reasons of these differences: the differences of language, social background, attitudes towards foreign cultures, people's views and customs and the translators themselves.Through the comparisons of the different translation versions and the analysis of the reasons, it can be learned that: translation versions are developing; correct attitudes should be applied when evaluating translation versions, especially those translated quite long ago; translatability is also changing; translation criteria would be re-explained and the tendencies of translation. This thesis has come to the following conclusions:(1) Translation is a dynamic process, and every translation version has its own life.(2) The evaluation of former translation versions should not just stay on the level of language. The factors of social, cultural and historical circumstances of that time should be taken into consideration.(3) Under the circumstance of cultural communication increasing, the tendencies of translation are to reserve more original flavor, change from free translation to literary translation and from adaptation to alienation.
