Literature Research:1. Constipation, a common clinical observation, has been noted and discussed by many physicians through the generations. Overtime, Traditional Chinese Medicine ("TCM") has developed and formed its treatment methodology for constipation. Scientific progress has also enabled both TCM and Western medical practitioners to gain better understanding of the problem. Building on the foundation laid down by the predecessors, TCM has developed new diagnosis and treatment methods. On the whole, treatment of constipation using TCM methodology appears to be more effective and has distinct advantages. By integrating various treatment methods, TCM also see improved clinical results.2. With graying population, dietary changes and psycho-social issues, the incidence of chronic elderly constipation has been on the rise. Treatment methodology for constipation is varied. In recent years, TCM physicians have been exploring various ways to effectively manage chronic elderly constipation. While different physicians emphasized on different aspects of their diagnosis, the overall TCM treatment methodology appears to be based on similar principles-it calls for restoring the various organs of the patients back to normalcy, and harmonizing the Yin and Yang of the patients'Qi and blood. Once functioning properly, the intestines would help smooth bowel movement. Clinical observation has proven that using TCM methodology in the treatment of elderly constipation has shown positive results with little side effect.Clinical Research:Aim:To observe the clinical efficacy of the "Yang Ying Yi QiWen Xia" method in the treatment of chronic elderly constipation.Method:Divide a group of 60 elderly patients with chronic constipation into 2 groups, namely,30 into a'Treatment Group'and 30 into the'Control Group'.The "Treatment Group" is treated with the "Zhi Ni Zhen Ye Wen Xia" method, while the "Control Group" is treated with the "Ji Chuan Jian"; each 12-day period as one treatment period.Result:The efficacy difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). Good progress was seen in the "Treatment Group" with improvement in the constipation problem showing a 90%efficacy rate, compared with the "Control Group" which shows a 60%efficacy rate. Alleviation in both the main and secondary symptoms of constipation was also more distinct for the "Treatment Group" compared with the "Control Group".Conclusion:The "Yang Ying Yi Qi Wen Xia" method of treating elderly chronic constipation demonstrates distinct efficacy.
