Objective:Investigate relation between carotid stenosis and cognitive impairment. Observe cognitive change of patients who suffer severe stenosis of carotid after surgeryObject and Methods:selected 94 patients with carotid artery stenosis from the hospital and Hunan Province Brain Hospital by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Divide these patients into three groups according to the degree of carotid stenosis grade. Use MMSE to evaluate these patients with carotid artery stenosis. Carry out the single factor correlation analysis between the degree of carotid stenosis and the MMSE score, analysis correlation between the degree of carotid stenosis and cognitive dysfunction. Followed up 16 cases with severe carotid artery stenosis after CEA or CAS and evaluate them with MMSE score.Select randomly 16 patients from these patients with light carotid stenosis as a control group, then follow up them and evaluate with MMSE score. Observe intervention effect of the MMSE score of these patients before and after surgery by repeated measures analysis of variance.Result:Carry out the single factor correlation analysis between the degree of carotid stenosis and the MMSE score, R=-0.731,P=0.01. The degree of carotid stenosis of patients is negatively correlated with the MMSE score, the more severe carotid artery stenosis is, the MMSE score is worse; The follow-up results of Surgery group and the control group by repeated measures analysis of variancer:(1) F=15257.742, P=0.02<0.05, there is difference in MMSE score changes between surgical intervention group and control group,so that surgical intervention can affect cognitive function. (2) F=56.38, P=0.034<0.05, it show that the MMSE scores of operation group before and after surgery is significantly different, we can explain that CEA or CAS surgical intervention can improve cognitive function of patients with severe carotid artery stenosisConclusions:The carotid stenosis severity and the degree of cognitive impairment is a significant positive correlation. The more severe carotid stenosis, the more severe cognitive impairment is; CEA and CAS surgical intervention can improve significantly cognitive function of patients with severe carotid artery stenosis, further information is that the carotid stenosis severity and the degree of cognitive impairment is a significant positive correlation; The patients with Carotid artery stenosis should be taken early intervention. The patients whose degree of carotid stenosis is more than 75% should be performed CEA or CAS in treatment.
