| Fu Qing Zhu TCM Gynaecology is one of the well known ancient classics in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) which documented a wide range of treatment methods and related prescriptions in treating commonly seen diseases in females.Since then, this literature has served great insights in the progress of clinical practice for treating health problems in women. This research applied comparison analysis and functional categorization to summarise the underlying prescribing tactics used in Chinese herbal prescriptions and the uses of groups of potential herbs as illustrated in Fu Qing Zhu TCM Gynaecology or similar literature. It was found that a group of eleven key herbs were widely applied, namely Paeonia roots, Bupleurum roots,Atractylodes rhizomes,Morinda roots,Aconitum side roots,Dipsacus roots, Schisandra fruit,Figwort roots,Schizonepeta plant,Plantain seeds and Trichosanthes roots. The prescribing principles(including applicable functions, dosages and pairing potential) and the habitual abilities of the herbs in attaining the physiological balance were studied, collated and analysed. As documented in Fu Qing Zhu TCM Gynaecology,it was observed that the author often used Chinese Paeonia roots in herbal prescriptions to help boost the physiological functions of the heart,as well as replenishing the essences of the liver and kidneys.Up to two taels of Chinese Paeonia roots were often prescribed to calm the liver functions and this herb was often coupled with three to five maces of other blood nourishing herbs. When used together, they aided in the nourishing of the blood made from the liver.Rehmanniae roots and Cornus fruit were also added if kidney related symptoms surfaced. For symptoms such as emotional distress leading to loss of appetite or other gastrointestinal disorders,Chinese red dates, Chinese ginseng, atractylodes rhizomes or Chinese Liquorice could be implemented to relight the functioning of the gastrointestinal system.Small amounts of Bupleurum roots or Cyperus rhizomes were added to lift the once compressed emotional spirit, while small amounts of Curcuma roots could be added to boost circulation and terminate bleeding from the body.Paeonia bark,Rehmanniae roots,Gardenia fruit or Scutellaria roots could be incorporated to help ease the release of internal heat generated by an overworked liver. This project had successfully collated the potential functions of several common yet important Chinese herbs, according to their applications used in Fu Qing Zhu TCM Gynaecology.Among all,Bupleurum roots were documented as having four functional abilities, namely in releasing blockages in the circulation of the body, enhancing the flow of energy and improving blood circulation in the body,as well as directing active components of the other herbs into the liver and kidney meridians to carry out their medicinal missions. Dosages of up to one mace were usually prescribed for Bupleurum roots. However, this herb was seldom prescribed for liver dysfunctional symptoms that might be accompanied by symptoms of essence deficiencies in the kidneys. Not only could Atractylodes rhizomes be used to boost the Spleen functions, but it could also aid better circulation around the circumference of the waist, and thus enhancing the overall circulation of the whole body.Due to this ability in boosting circulation around the waist area,Atractylodes rhizomes was able to treat ailments involving the conception meridian, the process of pregnancy and hence conditions relating to the governor meridian. In his classic book,Physician Fu often prescribed large amounts ofAtractylodes rhizomes to nourish and promote healthy energy circulation around the waist area.Atractylodes rhizomes were usually coupled with Chinese ginseng to help fix the root problem in poor circulation. Processed Rehmanniae roots could also be paired together to adjust the physiological conditions of our "internal landscape",as well as to replenish the essential materials in the body. The ratios of Atractylodes rhizomes and processed Rehmanniae roots were adjusted according to the different body constitutions. When warming the functions of potential systems in the body,Fu Qing Zhu TCM Gynaecology documented cases where Morinda roots frequently played important roles in ensuring proper functioning of the kidneys, which in turn aided the functions of the Spleen and Stomach.Good circulation also encouraged stable progress in the foetal development, as well as relieving symptoms related to the conception and urinary bladder meridians. The potential pairing abilities and dosages were also investigated and analysed.Aconitum side roots were often used in small amounts to warm the kidney meridian, mainly to ensure the proper functioning of the kidneys. This project also investigated the potential functions and pairing ratios of Aconitum side roots used in several prescriptions of Physician Fu's classic. The uses of Dipsacus roots were often associated with blood related ailments, such as anaemic conditions or after severe loss of blood.Small dosages of Schisandra fruit were applied to improve the functions of the kidney and lungs,in attempt to restore them to their ideal physiological states. The tactical use of Schisandra fruit also acted as a gatekeeper to help prevent the extreme properties of other herbs used in the same prescriptions from skewing the physiological balance to undesired conditions. It was observed that Physician Fu used large amounts of figwort roots in replacement of Anemarrhena rhizomes,Phellodendron bark,Rehmanniae roots and mineral Gypsum in several of his prescriptions. This was to avoid and prevent the extreme properties of the latter herbs from disrupting the overall circulation or other bodily functions in the body. This research also collated four major medicinal functions of the Schizonepeta plant as a potential herbal component to help release possible blockages in the body's circulation, as well as to boost energy flow along the meridian passages. This aromatic herb was also believed to have the ability to improve blood circulation and lead the other herbal components into the mode of action along their respective meridians.Different dosages of Schizonepeta plant were also studied and analysed. The functions of Plantain seeds buffer their functions according to different dosages prescribed, mainly diuretic and the ability to release internal trapped heat.Trichosanthes roots had three vital functions in nourishing and calming the growing foetus, and at the same time ensure good circulation to the designated organs so that the foetus was able to access the necessary nutrients. This herb was often used during pregnancy to help release the excess internal heat generated from the body due to the development of the foetus, and at the same time maintaining the desired levels of bodily fluids in the body.It was also found that Physician Fu had developed seven formulary principles as documented in Fu Qing Zhu TCM Gynaecology, emphasizing the importance of using different methods in achieving and sustaining the balance of the kidney functions, just like the close relationship between a mother and her child. In this way,the harmony of functional abilities of the major organs in the body could be achieved.Part of the research was also to reorganize the presence of herbs that specialized in replenishing the essentials wherever the body lacked. The related uses of these herbs were also analysed using different dosages. In this way,one could study and applied the principles derived by Physician Fu on his prescribing tactics in using large dosages of essence replenishing herbs,as well as those herbs which managed the levels of bodily fluids.Due to much blood lost during delivery, the new mother would most probably suffer imbalances in Yin and Yang, thus displaying symptoms such as induced anaemia,as well as feeling drained or constantly tired.Under these circumstances,Physician Fu advised on the importance of not skewing the treatment regimes too much to further upset the status of Yin and Yang in the body.In order to treat liver related ailments, the usual practice was mainly to restore the physiological functioning of the liver.Physician Fu applied the couplet comprising of Paeonia roots and Chinese Angelica and prescribed both herbs in significantly large quantities in his prescriptions. In addition, small portions of Bupleurum roots were added to the couplet in the ratio of 1:20,to help release any potential blockages in the body circulation.Occasionally, Physician Fu would prescribe herbs such as Cyperus rhizomes and Chinese mint to maintain the interrelated functions between the liver and kidneys.Processed Rehmanniae roots, Cornus fruit and Chinese yam were often paired in close vicinty to replenish any essence loss in the vital organs. It was revealed in the comparison analysis that the frequencies of applications involving the Chinese yam were much higher than those of Cornus fruit. This was because any emotional distress to the liver would affect the physiological functions of the Spleen and Stomach, hence it was crucial to incorporate herbs such as Atractylodes rhizomes,Chinese yam or Chinese ginseng and other herbs with similar functional abilities to help support healthy digestive processes. In return, the nutrients from the food consumed could also provide comfort to the liver,as well as replenishing the lost essences in the kidneys. Physician Fu used Scutellaria roots,Gardenia fruit and Paeonia bark to help release the trapped internal heat generated by an overworked organ or group of related organs in the body, such as the liver.Little was mentioned on the principle in treating symptoms associating with dampness and trapped heat in the body. The only traced evidence found was the use of Gardenia fruit,Poria and Artemisia plant in classic formula - Jia Jian Xiao Yao San.Main function was to help flush out the ailment causing pathogens from the body, via oral administration. The use of Auratium fruit was also incorporated in treating symptoms such as dull pain experienced along the side of the body, while Corydalis roots were often used to relieve menstrual pains.Ashes from the roots of Panax notoginseng,Schizonepeta plant,Chinese fungus and ginger could be applied to stop uncontrolled bleeding.Curcuma roots were also used to control bleeding.Physician Fu highlighted that if herbal prescriptions had to be administered during pregnancy,it was critical to consider the conditions of the growing foetus as the main priority, while restoring the functions of the liver play a role as a supplementary support. When boosting the physiological health of the Spleen and Stomach,Physician Fu often incorporated couplets consisting Chinese ginseng and Atractylodes rhizomes, and adjusted the dosages according to the severity of the ill circulation. In addition,Chinese Astragalus and Chinese yam were also seen being paired with the couplet in multiple prescriptions to help enhance the flow of energy in the body.Morinda roots and Rubus fruit were essential herbs to help safeguard the essence pools in the kidneys and reviving the functions of the spleen. This also indirectly ensured proper functioning of the pericardium which protected the heart.Morinda roots and Rubus fruit would have to be replaced by Cinnamon bark and minute quantities of Aconitum side roots, and herbs of warming properties such as Comus fruit, Dipsacus roots,Chinese wolfberries and Cuscuta seeds during pregnancy. For symptoms like indigestion or foul faeces or difficulty in passing motions, herbs such as Poria and Chinese Coix seeds could be added to the prescriptions to help ease the conditions. On the other hand, small amounts of circulation improving herbs, for example the Cimicifuga rhizomes or Bupleurum roots could be used in cases of chronic diarrhoea or fatigue and poor absorption.Kidney essences could be greatly depreciated due to too frequent or persistent sexual activities. For this, prescriptions would include processed Rehmanniae roots,Cornus fruit,Chinese wolfberries and other related Chinese herbs to help replenish the lost essential assets. From the results,it is not hard to understand Physician Fu emphasized the great importance of maintaining the healthy functions of the Spleen and Stomach by tactically applying key ingredients wherever necessary.Other herbs could also be paired with crucial herbal couplets, according to each individual's body constitution,so as to help relieve symptoms to eventually restore harmony in the body's biological system.Physician Fu had indeed inherited a rich well of knowledge and insights to the future clinical practice in treating gynaecological disorders in women. |
