Objective To explore the content of nursing practice and professional training needs of nurses contact with people living with HIV and AIDS(PLWHA) in Beijing. Methods Quantitative research and qualitative research were conducted in this study. Eighty-four nurses from three contagious diseases hospitals in Beijing were recruited to take part in the quantitative research.They all had experience to take care of PLWHA.Two questionnaires were used to investigate the content of practice and professional training needs of them.Thirty-eight nurses among them working in the contigious wards were selected to fill in other two questionnaires,to aquire the relative factors to work and idiographic training needs.Eight nurses participated in non-structured interview regarding their experience of caring for PLWHA.Results The nurses in out-patient department mainly assisted doctors to do treatment.They also provide HIV voluntary counseling and testing(VCT) and hospitalized service. The nurses in the ward of AIDS mainly did some routine work,secondly took care of HAART patients and provided mental care to PLWHA.The main relative factors of nurses' work were:Low salary,lack of regard from hospital administrators.Dificiency of specialized nursing for PLWHA,lacking consciousness of professional nursing responsibility,and lacking chance to learn more professional knowledge were found in the qualitative data.Conclusions Nurses just did the routine work for PLWHA, and they need to intensify specialization.The responsibility of nurse for PLWHA is not very clear.It's need to hold more specialized inservice training of nurses in order to renew their knowledge.
