Il-5 And Gm-csf In The Expression And Significance Of Chronic Nasal Sinus Mucosa - Sinusitis

Objective:In order to investigate the effect of interleukin-5(IL-5)and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor(GM-CSF)in the pathogenesis of CRS and the changing regulation of these two cytokines expression during different phrases of recovery process of mucosa in sinus cavity before and after endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS),the expressions of IL-5 and GM-CSF in sinus mucosa tissue of chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS)before and after ESS were detected in the study.Methods:Sinus mucosa tissues were obtained from 10 typeⅡCRS patients before ESS and at 1 week,4 to 6weeks and 8 to 10 weeks after ESS respectively, 10 pure nasal septum deviation patients as controls.The expressions of IL-5 and GM-CSF were detected by ElivisionTM S-P immunohistochemistry.Results:①The expression level of both IL-5 and GM-CSF in sinus mucosa tissue of the typeⅡCRS patients before ESS and at 1,4 to 6,8 to 10 weeks after ESS respectively was significant higher than that of the control group(P＜0.01).②There was a significant decrease in expression of IL-5 and GM-CSF at 1 week after ESS comparing with before ESS subjects(P＜0.01).A significant increase in the expression of IL-5 and GM-CSF at 4 to 6 weeks after ESS was demonstrated comparing with before ESS and at 1 week after ESS(P＜0.01),the expression reached the peak.At 8 to 10 weeks after ESS,the expression of IL-5 and GM-CSF decreased comparing with before ESS and at 4 to 6 weeks after ESS(P＜0.01),IL-5 decreased and GM-CSF had a little increase comparing with at 1 week after ESS(P＜0.01,P=0.048,respectively).Conclusion:The significant high expression of IL-5 and GM-CSF in sinus mucosa tissue of typeⅡCRS patients before ESS indicates that IL-5 and GM-CSF may play an important role in the pathogenesis of CRS.There are some expression changing regulations of IL-5 and GM-CSF in sinus mucosa tissue of typeⅡCRS before and after ESS as follows:at 1 week after ESS,there was a significant decrease in expression of IL-5 and GM-CSF;the expression of IL-5 and GM-CSF increased and peaked at 4 to 6 weeks after ESS;while at 8 to 10 weeks after ESS,the expression of IL-5 and GM-CSF decreased.It indicates that IL-5 and GM-CSF may have an intimate relation with recovery process of mucosa in sinus cavity of CRS.
