AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is caused by the infection of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) that leads the function of immune system partly or wholly losing. With the severe decrease of CD4 (+) T lymphocytes, body is attacked by opportunistic infections, tumor, and coexisting infection of pathogen, which give a kinds of clinical syndromes.There is no specific name in Traditional Chinese medicine about HIV/AIDS. According to the character of clinical process, it should belong to the category of epidemic disease, five main impairments, etc. It is either a sole epidemic disease or the simplicity of fatigue, but a complex of deficiency and excess factor, and the anti-pathogenic qi and pathogenic factors in the body.After the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) makes this disease a controlled chronic deteriorating and virus is suppressed in a maximum way, so that the immune system could be restored. With the decreasing of vital rate and the HIV/AIDS associated illness, the quality of life is been improved. But it is not perfection, such as bad adherences, drug intolerance and the rebound of viral load. Objective: This study is probing into the feasibility, necessity, and effect of the combined Traditional Herb and HAART therapy, discussing from the aspect of clinic and thesis.Materials and Means: By randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 100 cases was observed. According to the clinical syndrome, immune parameters and viral load, the two treatment (combining or not with HAART ) were examined. According to the mechanism of HIV/AIDS from thesis, the deferent characteristic effect of the two kinds of drugs is being discussed and concluded, evaluating the feasibility of the combination therapy, so that a blue picture of a preparatory theory could be drawn out. With some unavoidable reasons, 93 cases completed the whole investigation. The observation was 11 months long, once very month. The test drugs was given to patients, CRF table was finished, the sample blood was sent for CD4(+)T cell and CD8(+)cell counting, virus load experimental test and security index assay. Result: The essentiality of the combined therapy of western with Chinese medicine is drawn from a systematic review of the literature on clinical and laboratory focusing on the mechanism of HAART, immunological changes in AIDS patients, and the function of traditional herbs. There is a principium better result in the observation group(herbs combined with HAART) than in the control group(placebo combined HAART), with a minim higher CD4+ T cell and CD8+ T cell count that appeared in A group than in B group.After 11 months, for the comparison of A group and B group, mean differences in time-weighted change from baseline in CD4 T-cell count were-87．07 and-163．88, respectively(P<0．05) . And the IL-4 OD dropped down while the IFN-γslightly climbed up.Conclusion: Though, from immunologic information there is no significant difference in the two groups, but from clinical information there is some helping in immunologic restoration, treated by ZY-2 combined with HAART therapy. There is evident effect of combination of western and eastern medicine.
