Objective:To discuss the changes of Genuine Species and functions of Fangji inHerbal literatures; To study the kidney toxicity of Guang fangji and the feasibility of detoxification by compatibility.Method: Herbal literatures in history were consulted for making clear the changesof Fangji's species and fuctions in different period.Observed in mouse the acute oral toxicity.Observed in rat the chronic toxicity to kidney and the detoxification by compatibility.Result: FangJi and Mu fangji are different herbs come from different species andhave different functions. In ancient time ,FangJi came from Aristolochia heterophylla Hemsl.,Mu fangji came from Cocculus trilobus(Thunb.) DC.,but now FangJi come from Stephania tetrandra S. Moore and Mu fangji come from Aristolochia fangchi Wu.Acute toxic test shows that LD50 is 69.8305g/kg.Chronic toxic test shows that compared to blank group, the concentrations of AKP were significantly higher(p<0.05) in high dosage group. Detoxification test shows that the concentrations of AKP could recover to normal level in the groups matching respectively with Guizhi and Huangqi. Edema of renal tubular epithelial cell took place in high dosage group by pathologic examination of kidney, The expression of EGF was slight positive in renal tubules of all groups. The expression of TGF- β1 was strong positive in few distal convoluted tubules of the high dosage group. Conclusion:FangJi has different plant sources in different times, longterm use ofpharmacopoeial dose of Guang fangji shows no harm to the kidney.Renal injury may occur if relatively large dose is given , which could be disappeared by matching with Guizhi and Huangqi respectively.
