Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang Clinical Treatment Of Law

Decoction of Ephedra, Almond, Licorice and Gypsum (Ma Xing Gan Shi Tang, MXSGT for short) originates from Rule #63, 162 of "Treatise on Exogenous Febrile"(Shanghan Lun), which is a prescription used primarily in the treatment of syndrome due to heat-pathogen accumulating in the lung. The pathogenesis is that the disease aggravate, the heat-pathogen is immersed in, and accumulate in the lung, after erroneous treatment of diaphoresis and purgation for Taiyang syndrome. The syndrome manifests wheezing badly, sweating, reddened tongue, with thin yellow coating, and rapid pulse. The prescription is designed fro expelling pathogenic heat with pungent and cool drugs, clearing away lung heat to relieve asthma. The ingredient includes Ephedra, Almond, Licorice and Gypsum, the four Chinese herbal medicines, and we should pay attention to the proportion between Ephedra and Gypsum.Decoction of Ephedra, Almond, Licorice and Gypsum is widely used by the later generation of physicians. For example, in "Golden Mirror of Medicine", it adds tea bust to treat the syndrome due to cold-pathogen attacking the Feisu, the cold-pathogen transforming into heat-pathogen, and accumulating in the Lung Channel, which marked by asthma, tachypnea, nostrils flapping, obnubilation, dysphoria. In "Modern translation of ShanghanLun", it is proved as effective in healing diphtheria in the early stage, which is marked by dysphoria, thirst, asthma, cough, and so on.The clinical application rules of MXSGT are classified as following: (1) The lung dominates Qi and control respiration, the lung-qi is characterized by dispersing outward and downward. It is applicable to the syndrome about respiration caused by heat-pathogen accumulating in the lung, for MXSGT's action of dispersing heat, such as upper respiratory infection, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, epidemic influenza, intense heat due to exopathy, acute cholecystitis,.infantile fever, chronic bronchitis acute attack, acute or chronic cough, chronic obstructive emphysema, bronchiectasis, pulmonary heart disease, infantile asthma, cough, pneumonia, measles, whooping cough. The treatment to the sick children should be appropriate for their constitutions, age, and the state of illness, due to their inadequate Qi-blood and delicate Zangfu-ograns, for fear hurting the spleen-stomach organs. (2) The lung has its opening in the nose, MXSGT's dispersing lung heat is suitable for the syndrome about otolaryngology caused by heat-pathogen accumulating in the lung, such as coryza, allergic rhinitis, nasosinusitis, acute pharyngitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, thyroiditis, gingivitis, aphonia, laryngeal edema. (3) The lung is associated with the skin and hair, MXSGT's dispersing lung heat is indicated for the dermatosis caused by pathogenic heat in lung, such as summer dermatitis, furunculosis, urticaria, dermal pruritus, eczema, psoriasis, acne, molluscum contagiosum, zona. We can add the Chinese tradition medicine of dispelling wind and arresting itching, removing heat from blood, invigorating thecirculation of blood, or cooperating with the decoction of four ingredients, to improve the curative effect. (4) The lung has an exterior-interior relationship with the large intestine. MXSGT's dispersing lung heat is applicable to intestine and anal diseases due to pathogenic heat in the lung moving downward in the large intestine, such as hemorrhoids (internal, external, inflammatory, hemorrhage and incarcerated) , anal fissure, rectocele, constipation. (5) The lung ,at the uppermost location of all the Zang-organs, is compared to the original source of body fluid, and maintains the smooth passages for distributing body fluid. MXSGT's dispersing lung heat can be used for the syndrome about retention of phlegm and water-pathogen due to lung-heat, such as cystitis, acute nephritis (wind edema), night sweat, child salivation, anorexia, frequent micturition, enuresis.
