Objective:To explore the situation of quality of life(QOL) in patients with climacteric syndrome and the effects of the Gengniananyi Fang on the QOL among patients with climacteric syndrome.Methods:WHOQOL-BREF, recommended by WHO rwas accepted to study the QOL of 311 women aged 40-60 years. The scores of QOL were compared with between climacteric normal group and climacteric syndrome group. 96 patients in climacteric syndrome group were randomly allocated into treatment group and untreatment group respectively. 78 patients in the treatment group were divided into two group: TCM group (received Gengniananyi Fang) and Western medicine group (received Estrogen). A course contained 30 days. After a course the scores of QOL of the treatment group were compared with the untreatment group. The scores of QOL and symptoms were also compared with between the TCM group and the Western medicine group. After 2 courses we compared the scores of QOL of TCM group in different courses.Results:1. The climacteric normal group had higher scores than the climacteric syndrome group in physiology, psychology, society and environment domains of QOL.2. Comparing the scores in every domains of QOL between the climacteric normal group and the climacteric syndrome group, there was significant difference by statistical processing(P<0.05).3. Before treatment there was no significant difference between the treatment group and the untreatment group on the scores of QOL hi every domains(P>0.05).30 days later, the treatment group had significant difference with the untreatment group on the scores of QOL in physiology, psychology and society domains(P<0.05). The scores of QOL in the three domains of the treatment group were higher than the untreatment group. There was no significant difference in environment domain between the two groups(P>0.05).4. Before treatment there was no significant difference between the TCM group and the Western medicine group on the scores of symptoms(P>0.05). The two groups both had lower scores of symptoms after treatment(P<0.05). Comparing the scores of symptoms after treatment between the two groups, the TCM group had lower scores than the Western medicine group(P<0.05).5. Before treatment there was no significant difference between the TCM group and the Western medicine group on the scores of QOL hi every domains(P>0.05). After treatment the TCM group had improvement in physiology, psychology and society domains of QOL(P<0.05), no improvement in environment domain(P>0.05).The Western medicine group had improvement in physiology domain of QOL(P<0.05), no improvement in the other domains(P>0.05). In the physiology domain the TCM group improved much more than the Western medicine group(P<0.05).6. Before treatment there was no significant difference among syndrome of deficiency of the liver and kidney, syndrome of asthenia of heart and kidney and syndrome of asthenia of both spleen and kidney(P>0.05). Comparing the deviant value of the scores in every domain between pretreatment and post-treatment, there was no significant difference among these three syndromes (P>0.05).7. To a certain extent, the more course, the higher scores of QOL in physiology, psychology and society domains in TCM group. Conclusion:The patients with climacteric syndrom had lower QOL than the normal climacteric women. Therapy can improve the QOL of the patients with climacteric syndrom. Gengniananyi Tang can ameliorate the correlate symptoms and markedly improve the QOL in patients with climacteric syndrom. To a certain extent, the more course, the higher scores of QOL in physiology, psychology and society domains.
