| This paper includes four parts: the literary summary, the pattern and relationship between formulae and principles, the formula patterns and analysis of relieving exterior syndrome of the diseases of the Taiyang channel, and the basis for using drugs pungent in flavor and warm in property to relieve exterior syndrome and its influence to the present generation. This paper is written surrounding the relationship among syndromes, formulae and principles. The main contents and conclusion are as follows: 1. Literary summary: mainly elaborated on the founding, development, and contribution of the diagnosis and treatment based on the differentiation of symptoms and signs of the Zhang Zhong-jing school through the years. Different scholars above-mentioned show in researches that their opinions have advantages and disadvantages at the same time. Some of these opinions show incompleteness, for example, discussing only on channels and leaving out the zang and fu organs, discussing only the 6 natural forces and forgetting the channels, or the opinion that exogenous febrile diseases are simply the disorders among qi and not the zang and fu organs or channels. However, if the channels, zang and fu organs, and qi of the 6 channels are interrelated, combining the advantages of different opinions, then we can more completely indicate the pathologic mechanisms of exogenous febrile diseases. When combining the advantages of determining the disease according to the formulae or according to the principles, we can therefore understand more completely the principles on diagnosis and treatment based on the differentiation of symptoms and signs of the Treatise on Febrile Diseases.2. Pattern and relationship between formulae and principles: mainly elaborated on the relationship between formulae and treatment principles and the pattern of formulae formation. We can see from history that the medicinal herbs come before the formula. Medicinal herbs are herbs used alone while formulae are a combination of herbs. The process from single-used medicinal herbs to formulae is a leap from change in number to change in quality. The process from formulae to treatment principles is a second leap in the usage of medicinal herbs. It is an upgrading from the sensible experiences of clinical prescription to a reasonable perception. If the pattern of formulae formation is completely understood, then there could be live use of the treatment principles, achieving the goal of learning the principles without having to use the exact herbs. 3. Formula patterns and analysis of relieving exterior syndrome of the diseases of the Taiyang channel: mainly elaborated on the treatment principle of Diseases in the Taiyang Channel of the Treatise of Febrile Diseases, which is relieving exterior syndrome. We discussed its inner meaning, origin, and use. We believe that it includes the use of drugs pungent in flavor and cool to relieve exterior syndrome. Relieving exterior syndrome is not simply used in the diseases of the Taiyang channel but also related to the diseases of the other 5 channels. We introduced the use of treating exterior and interior at the same time to deal with diseases of the Taiyang channel combined with other channels and also the use of relieving exterior syndrome to deal with the combination of syndromes and diseases of other channels accompanying exterior symptoms. We also especially dealt with the topics of exterior syndromes not indications for using the treatment of relieving exterior syndromes and other syndromes aside from exterior syndromes that are indications for the treatment of relieving exterior syndrome, such as sweating, diarrhea, diabetes, jaundice, edema, lung-distension, migratory arthralgia, tawny sweat, etc.) We gave special attention to mention the importance of the treatment of relieving exterior syndrome in the Treatise of Febrile Diseases and researched on the formulation pattern of related formulae. 4.
