Experimental Study on the Pharmacodynamics and Toxicology of Nourishing Yin and Clearing Lung-heat Syrup in Treatment of Chronic Bronchitis and Chronic Pharyngitis Postgraduate: Li Peibo Tutor: Professor Guo Jiansheng Deputy Director Pharacist Du He Hunan College of Thaditional Chinese Medicine (Changsha, 410007) ABSTRACT Syrup for Nourishing Yin and Clearing Lung-heat contains Dried Rehmannia Root1 Ophiopogon Root1 Scrophularia Root Sichuan Fritillary Bulb1 White Peony Root1 Moutan Bark1 Peppermint and Liquorice, which has the effect of nourishing Yin and moistening dryness1 clearing away heat from the Lung and relieving sore throat. Many medicians look on this recipe as a very important and basic recipe for treating airway disease. This thesis had done sonic experimental study on the pharinacodynamics and toxicity of this syrup. The study showed that the syrup could inhibit the pain induced by acetic acid (0.6%) and raise the pain threshold value of heat stimulation, could inhibit the mice auricle tumefaction degree induced by xylol and the rats footpad swell induced by egg-albumin and the granulomatous hyperplasia by sc agar, could obviously prolong the incubative period and decrease the times of cough induced by ammonia liquor or Sulphur Dioxide gas in mice, could increase secretion of Phenol red from mice tracheas and accelerate the phlegm displacement of rats, could facilitate the formation of hemolysin and raise the index of carbon 3 granule clearance in immunosupressive mice, and could inhibit several bacteria including Staphylococcus aurouo Hemolytic Streptococces Pneumococcus. The toxicological study also showed that the Half Lethal Dosage (LD50) of the mice by P0 could not be calculated, the Maximal Tolerance Dosage (MTD) of the mice by P0 amounts to 304.08g/kg, which is 1412 times as much as the clinical dosage of an adult. The rats were given the syrup 38g/kg~. 19g/kg and 8.5g/kg respectively for three mouths, the distinctive toxic reaction didn抰 emerge. It抯 dosage had achieved 176 88 and 44 times of the clinical dosage of an adult. Finally, we can infer from the experiments?results: Syrup for Nourishing Yin and Clearing Lung-heat has obvious effect of analgesic1 anti-inflammation1 cough-relief1 expectorant1 anti-bacteria and enhancing immunologic function as well as low toxicity, and can be used as an effective and safe Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat chronic Bronchitis and Chronic Pharyngitis with Yin-deficiency.
