Shang Han Za Bing Lun (Treatise on Cold Diseases and Miscellaneous Diseases) is called The Originator of Formulae Book. The book was written by Zhang Zhongjing who assimilate thoughts of Shennong and I Yin. As the accurately dispensing, rigorously standard and outstanding curative effect, the book is thought to be a treasure by all doctors. They all expect to be good doctors by study and relish the essential meaning of the book. But they have different views on the dosages of the Classical Formulae. Particularly from Tang Dynasty, following the great change of dosages, many doctors are confused to use Classical formulae. So we need to resolve the urgent problem. In recent years, there are many relevant researches of the dosages. But it cannot carry conviction because all the researches are all from the perspective of philology and can not closely connect with clinical practice. All the researches can not be used for clinical practice and setting the standard of dosages. So we need put in innovative research concept and scientific approach. This research is taking traditional research methods of philology, evidence-based medicine and statistical analysis method. The meaning of this research is to open a new research shortcut to explore the original dosages and modern applied reasonable dosages. This study is briefly introduced the main content as follows:Research PurposeFirst, by selecting six representative Classical Formulae, depicting the use of the six formulae by famous doctors from Tang to Qing Dynasty, we can directly observe the changes from Han Dynasty and know the reason of changing.Second, by statistical analysis, we can get the largest, smallest and mean dosages. It will help us search the original dosages at the time of Zhang Zhongjing and to compare with modern dosages. At last, we can get a reasonable dosage limits as a reference for clinical practice.Research Content and MethodsThe main research is about the dosages change in Shang Han Lun. First, we need to establish the inclusion criteria of formulae. We chose Cinnamon Twig Decoction, Ephedra Decoction, White Tiger Decoction, Major Bearing Gas Decoction, Minor Decoction of Bupleurum and Decoction of Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Gypsum and Licorice.Second, we chose 186 famous doctors from Tang to Qing Dynasty and retrieve the Classical formulae they used.Then, we put the data into Excel list and convert it into modem dosages in accordance with the standard of weights and measures at every period.At last, we use statistical software SAS8.2 to statistics processing the data and indicate by X±s. By normal distribution examination and analysis of variance, we get mean differences between groups comparison and use sum check if variance not neat.We compare the dosages at difference period and use P< 0.05 to said with a statistical significance. Then draw the track, and calculates the variation of the biggest, minimum, average and use four points digits show common dose limits.Research ResultsResearch shows that the difference is not big from Song dynasty to Qing dynasty. The statistics of dosages show meaningless.Data shows that after the Song Dynasty, the gross dosages reduce to one half to fifth of Han Dynasty. Differences are significant. Dosage of every herb drops accordingly.
