How to improve reliability transmission and prolong networks life-span is very importance subject for wireless sensor networks. Firstly, strict requirement of end-to-end reliability is brought forward by application; secondly, wireless communication link, which is influenced by all kinds of unpredictable factor, becomes extremely unreliable. Meanwhile, system resource is rather limited, especially for the energy resource. All these become the bottleneck for wireless sensor networks putting into practice from laboratory. Thus, how to satisfy the requirement of high reliability and actualize energy efficient data transmission becomes a key problem and hotpot.The large number of traditional Ad hoc routing protocols is directed at the mobile environment. Without considering the issue of constrained nodes energy and basing on the design of smallest jump (hop count, Hops), it mainly solves the issues of routing's robustness and scalability when nodes are in mobile environment. While in pratical applications of wireless sensor networks, each node is battery powered and most nodes maintain a static state or little movement. Only when a small number of nodes are "failure", will there be a slow network topology changes. Against such issues, this paper presents a joint optimization method, namely:choosing effective routing metric method in routing layer to achieve the purpose of network reliability and combining the routing layer power control method to extend the life of the network. The premise of joint work of the two layers to achieve the purpose of reliability and network life extension.This paper firstly makes a summary to power control and the existing routing metrics then finds the several key characteristics of wireless sensor networks communication link, such as high loss rate, obvious asymmetry, according to the experimental study. From these, a joint optimization algorithm is provided which connects EETX routing metric with power control. Finally, the joint optimization algorithm PCEETX in the paper is adapted to AODV routing protocol. Simulation results show that after the joint optimization algorithm proposed in the paper is used. Networks life-span is prolonged besides for improving reliability transmission.
