This article mainly elaborated a brief account of Viollet-le-Duc, the French architect, restorer, and theorist of the 19th century, and his restoration work of religious and military buildings, as well as two significance theoretical work: Dictionnaire Raisonne de l'Architecture francaise duⅪe auⅩⅥe Siecle and Entretiens sur l'Architecture, also the research condition at home and abroad. Comparing the restoration project of Cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris, and relative restoration reports, to analyze the inner relevance of the restoration practice and restoration theory. The article also expounded on the architecture theory in the work Entretiens sur l'Architecture:the architecture theory of ancient Greece and Rome, the Gothic architecture theory and theory of new form, to analyze not only the relationship between Viollet-le-Duc's architecture theory and the modern one's, but also the status of his restoration theory in his system of architecture theory.
