The development of the economic globalization pushes not only the economic localization, which takes cities as core, but also the competition between cities. In the 21st century, the competition between countries and enterprises is manifested in the competition of cities. The level of a city's competitiveness directly affects the economic development level and speed, even the countries'international competitiveness. In order to occupy their own places in the process of economic globalization, the governments of nations, areas, and cities in all of the world , apply themselves to cultivating and raising city competitiveness. Therefore, there are some important problems for domestic cities that how to objectively and exactly recognize their advantages and disadvantages to face the opportunities and challenges brought by economic globalization, how to draw up the economic development strategy of the city to improve city competitiveness. Moreover, to solve these problems relies on the study of city competitiveness. This paper studies on city competitiveness, which is divided into two parts:theoretical research and empirical research. The former three chapters are about theoretical research, and the forth chapter is about empirical research. The theoretical research part generalizes the theoretical basis, theoretical model and the concept of city competitiveness both at home and abroad. According to these theories, the paper introduces the complete and explicit definition of city competitiveness and brings in a new city competitiveness model .The paper emphasizes on empirical research using the data in 2004 as sample, whose objects are ten big cities:Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Shenyang, Dalian, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing and Chengdu. Firstly, on the basis of mean square deviation method, it finds out both the scores of integrated competitiveness of cities and other factors, based on that analyze the relationship between them. And then the paper computes the scores of competitiveness of cities above by principal component analysis and sorts out them for assessment. Secondly, it makes use of clustering method to analyze the change of city competitiveness during 1998-2004 by SPSS12.0 software. In term of the results, it gets some influencing factors about the change. Finally, it analyzes the typical cities, which presents greater change during 1998-2004, realizes the intrinsic factors of thecompetitiveness change, and puts forward some policy advices. The innovation of this paper mainly lies in analyzing the evolving characteristic of comprehensive competitiveness and eight factors competitiveness of ten cities, named dynamic analysis, in light of which it points out the effects of different factors in the process of city development. Certainly, owing to the impact of evaluation index system of city competitiveness, the analysis exists a certain limit.
