Grid computing and web service technology, appeared as new distributed computing models, present a fundamental solution to the problem involving in resource sharing and cooperation in various of heterogeneous distributed visualization system, as well as the interoperation problem existing in distributed computing platform. As web service technology is being more and more mature and research on visualization technology based-on Grid is developing in greater depth, many companies and individuals choose to share their visualization web services on Web. Facing so many visualization services, it seems extremely important to take full advantage of visualization characteristics to choose matched services and compose them dynamically according to user's requirement, in order to satisfy complicated function needs. As a specific application in visualization domain, web service composition based-on visualization characteristics possesses common characters of general service composition technologies, and distinct specific characters of visualization technology itself as well. So the work of exploring the composition mechanisms of visualization services and studying their composition models has significant both in theory and practice. It will benefit visualization users in finding more suitable services and sharing a verity of visualization resources, and lay a good foundation for cross-platform, compute-intensive visualization tasks in distributed grid environment.Nowadays, there are still no reports about visualization service composition,In response to this situation, we commit an initial exploration on how to compose services in visualization domain. Our works and achievements include as following:1. The thesis gives a comprehensive introduction to the current development status of web services and their composition technologies, and does an analysis and comparison of the mainstream composition technologies. Meanwhile, more detailed analysis is done on visualization technology, accompanied with description about the importance of the web service technology to distributed visualization systems.2. Deeply rooted in the characteristics of visualization services, a more comprehensive model is provided to describe visualization services, which can not only describe them in semantic aspect, but also offer a non-functional description based on Quality of Service (QoS), by expand the UDDI registry in functions.3. Under this new mechanism, the publishing way of visualization services is developed and two methods of choosing visualization services are presented, including method based on data model and method based on services'parameters, both of which take full advantages of the characters of visualization data or parameters, facilitating users in choosing key services when setting up a visualization pipeline.4. A composition model based on visualization characters (VSWSCM) is proposed in deeply consideration of the traits of visualization technology. Meanwhile, a semantic web services composition algorithm is developed, which can fill users' needs in function, and present an evaluating score based on QoS, as another reference standard for visualization users.5. A portal based on VSWSCM, aiming to publish and compose visualization services, is designed and implemented. By using this portal, users can publish, find and compose visualization services.
