With the development of the DSP technology, the microprocessor technology, the multimedia technology and the embedded technology, embedded multimedia products become more and more popular. Meantime, with the mature market of MP3, and the piecemeal mature and development of the related technologies such as the digital television, the 3G communication, the multimedia terminal and so forth, embeded multimedia systems can be predicted that will become research focus of products such as the consumer electronics, the video conference, the monitor and so forth in the near future.In view of multimedia systems more complex, and differences of multimedia systems of different hardware and different software platforms, it is necessary for these platforms to rewrite the code of processing multimedia, and to spend a lot of time and energy to integrate and use these drivers of processing multimedia when applications are going to be developed.This paper, which is on the basis of an analysis of some related technologies of the embedded multimedia systems and refers some market characteristics of the more successful products, puts forward embedded multimedia systems on the basis of GStreamer (Multimedia Framework). Terminal product of having a functionality of a PVR (personal video recorder) is designed by using two-chip ADM5120 and VW2010 program. Fully using technologies of kinds of embedded multimedia system development at the current stage, the GStreamer-based embedded multimedia system development related to technologies and the realization of the work are analysed and studied. Some technologies in the paper being researched and design considerations have a certain significance for the design of other similar products.The main contents of this paper are as follows:1) On the basis of the technical analysis of GStreamer-based embedded multimedia system design, some needed knowledge and problems needing attention is described in detail when this kind of products is designed and developed. on this basis, a overall framework of GStreamer-based embedded multimedia systems is proposed.2) Using of embedded multimedia systems analysis, the design of the software and hardware platform of the GStreamer-based Personal Video Recorder is described in detail.3) The core concept and basic programming of the GStreamer plug-in development are described in detail. And AVS video decoder plug-in which use on the PVR system is developed.4) The general process of the GStreamer application development is described in detail. And a simple player is implemented by means of the own plug-in.5) The success and deficiency of the paper are partly discussed. The next improved direction and goals are indicated.
