With the development of the technology of computer networks and the worldwide popularity of Internet, the scale of computer network is getting larger and larger the structure of network is becoming more complex. Therefore the demand of network topology discovery becomes more and more urgent. The network topology discovery is an important functional component of the network management and is also one of the most important parts in the study of network attack and defense. Correct topology information can provide the whole network structure and states to network administrator directly and effectively.Topology discovery have different layers. The discovery algorithms on the network layer are very mature, but on the physical layer, the research on the topology discovery algorithms is faultiness. So network topology discovery in physical layer is one of the hottest areas on network management. This paper was focus on the physical layer of the network topology discovery technology. Through the analysis of current mainstream algorithms, a new algorithm is proposed, and on this basis the physical topology discovery system has been designed and implemented. In this paper, depth and specific analysis of the current mainstream physical topology discovery algorithm, including the theoretical foundation, the basic idea of algorithm, the algorithm steps, data structures and the limitations of analysis.A highly efficient physical topology discovery algorithm is proposed which is the most creative originality in this paper. What's more, through about 1,000,000 experiments the new algorithm has been proved more efficient than the current mainstream algorithms.
