With the development of theory and technology in Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence, the increasing popularity of information appliances, as well as the growing desirability of human to enjoy our high quality of life which is brought by the civilization of modern technology, Intelligent Residence Community came into being after the concept of Smart Home in recent years. In the course of its development, there have been some vital issues and obstacles which seriously hindered the associated industry of Intelligent Residence Community to grow further, such as weak interoperation ability between various types of equipment, absence of ability to provide personalized services for every terminal user and system being difficult to expand and upgrade and so on.At present, domestic and foreign Intelligent Residence Community application systems are still in the applied theory research and user-enlightenment stage. In accordance with the general rules of industrial development, this kind of systems will inevitably walk up to the era of interconnection, standardization and unification. Amigo plan of the European Union, the representative of industry and academic organizations, has begun to reassert itself in the forward-looking research to resolve the above issues.Taking this industrial background as springboard, this article introduces the ideology of middleware into this field and design new-type distributed middleware system suit for Intelligent Residence Community application systems, aiming to fetch the following objectives with the aid of specialized middleware: non-discriminatory cut-over and use of all kinds of devices, flexible construction of services business, and low-cost upgrade and expansion of systems without close-down.This article firstly takes a retrospection on Intelligent Residence Community, middleware and other related technology. Basing on this work, this article discusses deeply on the expression pattern and mterconnection technology of the agents, which are the basis resources in Intelligent Residence Community and make up with physical equipments and the software systems deployed on them. After fixing on the above vital issues, this article gives the overall design solution of the dedicated middleware system of Intelligent Residence Community application systems. In this solution, ontology and OSGi are adopted to solve the expression issue and mterconnection issue respectively. The centre task of distributed middleware system is managing and maintancing the logic resources registered by agents. Middleware system provides basis services such as registry, lookup and cooperation to application services to make Intelligent Residence Community application systems to meet with the above objectives. At the end of this article, the whole design, implementation and testing procedure of a solution of an application scene is described in detail to prove provisionally the correctness and usability of the design solution of the middleware system.
