Volume clipping plays a decisive role in understanding 3D volumetric data sets because it is a method to operate on the focus areas by the position of voxels in the data set, to uncover the important, hidden details of a data set, and even often it is the only way to do so. With the development of volume visualization, volume clipping gradually achieves real-time interactive effect, bringing the application of both simulation and programming of surgery in clinic to be of great importance. This paper presents a relatively in-deep study on the volume clipping technology based on volume rendering. Firstly, on the research of ray-casting volume rendering algorithm, a new method which judges the spatial relation between ray sample point and curved geometry is given, to simplify the complexity of curve surface clipping. The volume clipping operations of plane, multi-plane or curved surface are realized. Secondly, this paper gives a study on volume clipping on 3D texture-mapping volume rendering, then presents a real-time volume clipping method based on the shadow map, and accomplishes the clipping operation on convex object effectively. This paper also presents the volume clipping method based on volume tagging for arbitrary clip objects and the mixed clipping technology for different shapes. Lastly, a comparision of the clipping results in the cutting speed and image quality is given, which is realized based on ray-casting volume rendering and 3D texture-mapping volume rendering, and lays a foundation for further study.
