With the development of the high-density TV and high-density video programs, the traditional optical disc such as DVD can not meet the need of the high-density video programs. Now there are two standards of blue ray disc: HD-DVD and BLU-RAY DISC to satisfy the demands. Nonetheless their technologies are complicated, and expense is high with the patents which are all owned by big companies. Next Generation Versatile Disc (NVD) which proposes a new data format and error correction code with independent intellectual property rights and high cost performance owns higher coding efficiency than DVD and 12GB which could meet the demands of playing the high-density video programs.Generally speaking, one complete optical system must have two main chips: servo chip and MPEG-II decoding chip. The channel decoder plays an important role in the servo chip. Therefore, the study and implementation of channel decoder of NVD with independent intellectual property rights is of great significance.A research is been doing on the data format and error correction code of NVD. After analysis of the procedure of the decoding and the characteristics of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), a decoder based on FPGA is implemented. The theory and method of designing the decoder, anti-interleave algorithms, normal data Reed-Solomon decoder and control data Reed-Solomon decoder algorithms, and the implementation of scramble are introduced. Simulation of the NVD decoder is implemented in Quartus II environment. Tests of processing velocity and error correction performance are done with the NVD decoder on the NVD experiment environment.The results suggest that the NVD decoder based on FPGA can do decoding correctly and fast with reliable performance. The results of error correction test amount to that of software simulation and show the capability of the error correction meets the demands.
