The market of Chinese Free Newspaper has just started While that abroad is developing like a raging fire."Metro Express", which was published on March 16, 2004 and sponsored by journalism group of Liberation Daily, indicates that China's free newspaper was born. More than 10 free newspapers appeared successively. Their courage to"dare for the world first"worth praising and honoring,, but how are the existence states of these free newspapers? How is the prospect of them in China? This paper has made a clear definition to the free newspaper which was studied in the article at first, that is,"newspaper which has publication number, Community-oriented public, can be got without paid and relies mainly on news and advertising information dissemination". Then analyses the development and survival of Chinese free newspapers comprehensively and deeply. There are some constraints when developing, such as the Boycott of the traditional media and impact of new media, the blocking of economic traffic and urbanization development level, the market "saturation" and irregular competition and so on. But it also has considerable room for development: unique advertising market space and large number of young readers; China's rapid development of transport and vast prospects of the subway will supply opportunities to the Metro Express'development; and also homogeneity flooding news provides a valuable space for the survival of free newspapers. This new free newspaper might set up in China if only we remove the constraints, find living space in the existing information system, and circumvent the contradictions and conflicts with traditional newspaper and so on. In particular, there are five important points: pinpoint the positioning of readers; make full use of various resources effectively; pay attention to humane care; differences in management; do a good job of newspaper recycling.
