With the development of computer graphics technology, 3D figure of terrain has become more and more popular. Visualization and building technology of 3D terrain is one of hot topics in computer graphics research field, having profound science purport and applying to many fields such as military affairs, education and publishing etc.Firstly, this paper analyses in detail building technology of 3D terrain and researches interactive 3D terrain building technology based on visual sense. It implements the idea of 3D terrain building from part to whole with the driving of user's visual sense, using the measure of graphics operating under the visualization environment. Secondly, this paper implements an arithmetic for calculating 3D terrain area, this arithmetic named Two-Steps takes polygon and grid's projection to the horizontal in the first step, then gets the elevation value of point of intersection by method of linear Interpolation. Thirdly, a new arithmetic named triangle subdivision arithmetic based on recursion is designed to calculate earth work. Fourthly, object store that has many kinds of natural scenes and manual buildings is designed in this system, enriching the expressive force of 3D terrain.Two-Steps arithmetic resolves the problem of complexity of finding points of intersection through 3D linear equation, and the arithmetic of triangle subdivision arithmetic based on recursion contributes a lot to calculation of earth work. These arithmetic can be efficiently used in practical projects. This system that is for building 3D terrain and taking data analysis can be wildly applied to many fields ,such as gardens design and water conservancy.
