Since Russell proposed the conception of photonic crystal fiber (PCF), many universities and institutes have been spending great deal of manpower and material resource on the theory and application researches for the PCF. The PCF is a kind of two-dimensional photonic crystals with defects. The core of PCF is a thread defect made up of quartz or air holes, and the fiber cladding consists of air holes distributed regularly. Hence, the PCF is also called holey fiber or microstructure optical fiber. Due to its unique configuration and guiding-light principle, better guiding properties, and design degrees of freedom, recently, they have become the research focus in optics and optical electronics.In this paper, the property of the phonic crystal is discussed and the concept of the PCF is introduced from the view of the photonic crystal. The construction and guiding light principle of photonic bandgap PCF and modified total internal reflection PCF are introduced. The application of PCF in the areas of optical communication and optical electron, and information management is illustrated and the practical meaning and value of studying crystal fibers is emphasized.Among various numerical analysis method, the plane wave expansion method is simple, reliable and high efficient. This paper emphasizes the basic principle of the plane wave expansion method, and by using this method, we analyze and calculate the band structure and the band gap in the photonic bandgap PCF, as well as the mode field profile, guiding mode, radiation mode, and dispersion relation in the modified total internal reflection PCF. Using the endless single mode of the PCF, the large mode PCF is designed. Large and single mode of the PCF can reduce the density of photo power and non-linear effect, and it is not be easily broken down, so there is wide application in the areas of high power transportation and high power optical laser and amplifier.
