In recent years, more attention has been paid to the research on 3D Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) in computer graphics. Meanwhile, computer simulation of the traditional art form Chinese Landscape Painting has made a great achievement. So the researchers have explored a new research direction, 3D simulation for Landscape Painting, in the field of computer art and simulation. As one of the three categories of Chinese Painting, Landscape Painting features rock as the main observational and descriptive object, and the critical TS'UN style represents the structure, texture and shade of the rock. The purpose of this study is to simulate the typical TS'UN effect in real Landscape Painting, which is beneficial to the development of Landscape Painting and computer art. With a long-term observation and conclusion of the most composition skills in Landscape Painting, integrating Fractal Theory and Differential Geometry, the paper proposed an innovative solution to simulate 3D TS'UN in Landscape Painting, based on the previous research results of TS'UN simulation and 3D NPR. It mainly consists of two parts: the construction of 3D rock model and the simulation of 3D TS'UN. A 3D rock model is the basis of 3D TS'UN simulation. Analyzing the characteristics of rock outline, we developed a sketch-based fractal construction method to build a 3D rock model, comparing the general ways to construct 3D rock outline and evaluating their mechanisms and deficiencies. The modeling process was illustrated in detail, so did the calculation of some parameters such as sketch statistics and random offset. The emphasis is on 3D TS'UN simulation. The outline of the rock was determined and the start point, the end point and the direction of the TS'UN stroke were measured, according to the information extracted from the 3D model. Then, a brush model and a brush-style model were added to complete the rendering of TS'UN automatically. The experimental result indicates that the proposed method has successfully realized the 3D rendering of the typical effects in Landscape Painting. With a relatively high flexibility and scalability, the research promotes the development of the simulation of Chinese Painting.
