21st Century is characterized by web information. Be it a country, a company or a person, it is of paramount importance to access valuable information in time. Infomation plays an important role in the development of a nation, a company or a people. The modern information age, in which documents and knowledge increase rapidly, puts forth a great challege to us. How to attain the needed information in the almost boundless information flow is worth researching at present and would be so in the future. Classification of books greatly helps supervise and make better use of traditonal books, and also comes into wider use in the digital Internet environment. The American classification system is widely used in more than one hundred countries and very popular among users from all over the world. Its application in the Internet environment is also the best. America leads the world in science, and economy and thus boosts the further development of books classification. This paper aims to make a comparative study on Chinese and American classification of books. Briefly introduce the classification of books systems, and then draw a comparison between them in relation to history evolution, redaction mechanism, developing trend and status quo of application. Based on the comparative study, some ideas and suggestions are brought forward. Those who hold some opinions are welcome to criticize me and correct my paper if there are any mistakes.
