In the current smart sensor network there are too many field-bus interface standards, which enhances the difficulty to make sensors from different companies interoperable and interchangeable. So it becomes harder to develop, integrate and maintain the network sensor system. To unify the bus interface standards, since 1997 the International Association of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the American National Standards Office have launched the IEEE 1451 standards on and to solve the problem of incompatibility among different sensors. A smart transducer interface module based on IEEE 1451.2 and single chip processor ADuC812 is designed.This paper discuss in 5 aspects: introduction of IEEE 1451 standards, hardware and software design of smart transducer interface module, research on transducer independent interface (TII), realization of transducer electronic data sheet (TEDS) and construction of smart transducer test platform.The sub-standards of the IEEE 1451 standard are concisely introduced in the paper, and the IEEE 1451.2 is especially emphasized on. Relationship between the network capable application processor (NCAP) and smart transducer interface module (STIM) is explained and some important technical indicators about IEEE 1451.2 are illuminated to summarize the keystones and difficulties in this design.The hardware circuit is founded base on the chip ADuC812, which includes the sensor module, signal processing module, reset circuit and power supply circuit; As for software, the programming language and developing environment are introduced, while the main structure and functions of STIM are given.While designing the TII and TEDS projects, the realization about the two protocols in hardware and the classification of TEDS are described. Then, the data transmission of TII, Meta- TEDS, channel TEDS and calibration TEDS are realized by C.Besides, to test the STIM module, a communication interface based on VB for testing the smart transducer is designed to display the real-time measuring results collected by muti-channel.By the research and realization on STIM based on the standard IEEE 1451.2, the functions of self-detection and self-tuning for sensor are completed. Practices show that the designed STIM runs well with NCAP, and they can work together as a network smart sensor system to realize the functions of multi-channel data collection, transmission, correction, and so on. The system has high practical value and provides a reference to the study on IEEE 1451 standards and the design of STIM.
