To facilitate a viable evolution of the 3G system towards extensive packet data traffic, the Release'5 3GPP specifications introduce a new concept denoted high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA). HSDPA brings a great increase of user peak data rates and cell throughput based on adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), and fast physical layer (L1) hybrid ARQ.TD-SCDMA is a time division duplex (TDD) system,it has a flexible channel allocation scheme which can support the data services ,of which the traffic is seriously asymmetric between uplink and downlink. It is very suitable to introduce HSDPA in TD-SCDMA system because downlink has much more traffic than uplink. The TD-HSDPA concept could improve spectral efficiency and make peak data rates up to 2.8 Mbps (single-carrier) in theory. This paper gives a detailed description of the basal principles and the important techniques in the TD-HSDPA system. With theory analyses and simulations, the system level performance of TD-HSDPA and the network configuration parameters are got, and they can direct the real network planning. Based on these results, the suitable ways of TD-HSDPA network planning are indicated.
