In recent years, Mobile Ad hoc Network has been more and more popular all over the world. The network suits for some special environment, such as meeting conference disaster-recovery home-network or battlefield for its dynamic topology constrained wireless bandwidth self-forming no fixed infrastructure and created on the fly. The nature between ad hoc network and other networks is so different that traditional routing technology can't meet the requirement of ad hoc network. The research and development of ad hoc routing protocol receive increasing attention. In the research of ad hoc network routing protocols, the most challenge is the dynamic change of network structure and environment. The key of improving the network performance and efficiency lies in the perfect match of routing strategy parameter configuration and environment features. The environment features includes node mobility network size traffic load and wireless transfer. But there's a rooted belief in the realm of routing protocol development that dramatically and unpredictably volatile topology imposes the most significant impact on the performance of ad hoc networks. As a result less effort has been focused on the quantified-analyses of different combined factors. The aim of this paper is to deeply research the nature of ad hoc network. And the mainly work is based on computer simulation. By comparing the preference of several simulation softwares, we choose the NS-2 as simulation tool. The contribution of this paper is: By lots of NS-2 simulation, quantify and analyze the performance of ad hoc network with AODV in different node mobility network size and traffic load, deeply research the independent influence and relations of three factors. We get the conclusion that the collective impacts of network size and traffic load are much more decisive to the network capacity than node mobility. In the development of routing protocols more attention should be paid to alleviate congestion and improve the network scalability.
