The mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) is a multi-hop temporary autonomous system of mobile nodes equipped with wireless transceivers. Because it doesn't depend on fixed network infrastructure, and it doesn't have central controlling node as well as be good in resisting destructions, it is applicable to many situations that have difficulties in wiring networks. Based on these special advantages, MANET plays an important role in military applications, and it also has a good prospect in civil applications. Because of constantly changing topology, which imposes new demands on the routing protocol, MANET can't adopt traditional protocols. Research of routing protocols becomes the most important part of the research in Ad hoc network.AODV routing protocol is an on-demand routing protocol which is specifically designed for MANET. It's one of the few MANET routing protocols that have been authorized to be RFC texts by IETF. So AODV routing protocol will probably play an important role in future MANET applications.Based on detailedly understanding the MANET characteristics, deeply analyzing the mechanism of AODV and thoroughly studying the existing related researches about the optimization to AODV routing protocol, the ER-AODV routing protocol is proposed in this paper which is an optimization to AODV routing protocol.Aiming at improving the performance against limitations of the instability of the minimum-hop count routing path and the nodes'energy problem of AODV routing protocol, ER-AODV routing protocol improves the routing path stability and the network performance by setting up link available time constraint in the routing discovery process and making nodes'aware of their energy. Results obtained by Network Simulation (NS2) show that the optimized AODV scheme performs effectively in terms of successfully packet delivery ratio, the number of broken link and the time of network divided. In this paper, the simulation platform of MANET was set up with NS2 simulation tools.Based on this platform, the feasibility of ER-AODV routing protocol was validated by comparing the network capability of traditional AODV routing protocol and optimizational AODV routing protocol.
