Resilient packet ring (RPR) is a new metropolitan area network (MAN) technology. It absorbs the economy of Ethernet and the reliability of SDH. It supports data transfer among stations interconnected in a dual-ring configuration, combining data, audio and video services. It solves the problem for QoS, service classify, and ringlet protection. RPR is economical as Gbit Ethernet and its frame encapsulation is more simple and flexible than PoS. It uses a spatial reuse mechanism and it can switch mechanism restores networks in less than 50 millisec when a failure is detected.A broad band MAN project MSTP embedding RPR technology constructs the broad band on SDH. But MSTP is just an adjunctive layer on SDH layer, it determines that MSTP is largely a transitional technology and can't display the entire RPR characteristic. The absolute RPR technology has reliability of SDH fiber ringlet network, the High efficiency of G-bit Ethernet and the Intelligent of IP network. It has the splendid ability not noly in mertopolitan area network but also in data private networks. It must have the better Market prospects.For the purpose of the absolute RPR technology implementation, this paper discusses and analyzes the IEEE802.17 Resilient packet ring (RPR) procotol in detail. First, the paper introduces the background, procotol model and key technology of RPR. Second, the paper fractionize the RPR node in several module according to different functions, as ringlet selection, topology dicovery and protection, fairness, local data flow buffer and rate control, transmit module, receive module, and designs these module's functions in detail. Then the paper designs the data interfaces which link the modules to enable them to operate better. Ringlet selection and topology discovery are the important modules in RPR node, having the key effect for the whole node's operation. So these two modules have designed and implement the main functions with VHDL language, and the simulations of the two modules are analyzed.
