Optical Burst Switch technology is a hybrid of Optical Circuit Switch and Optical Packet Switch which combines the advantages of these two together and overcomes their disadvantages. It’s a new optical switch technology that has a bright future and becomes the focus in the field of optical communication research. The requirement of optical hardware for Optical Burst Switch is much relaxed comparing with Optical Packet Switch; meanwhile, it can also provide wavelength resource statistical multiplexing capabilities as that in Optical Packet Switch and support the modern paroxysmal digital service transmission mainly in IP form. The most important key problems needed to be solved in Optical Burst Switch are to avoid the burst loss caused by burst contention, get high bandwidth-efficient, get high network throughput, and so on.The dual ring architecture used in Resilient Packet Ring makes this network robust. Each node in this ring use fair bandwidth algorithm to control the rate of local service traffic so that the local traffic of every node has the equal chance to access and occupy the ring. DiffServe can be realized by sorting the local service into different queue in the source node to meet different demands of different service. Based on the introduction of basic conception on optical burst switch, familiar methods used to resolve the burst contention which causes the burst discarding in Optical Burst Switch networks are introduced and researched. Ring topological architecture network is widely used in Metropolitan Area Network because of its simplexes. Thanks to the special topological architecture of Optical Burst Switch ring network, many other particular burst contention solutions can be used. The effect on the performance such as network throughput .etc of some usual burst contention resolution that are unique for optical burst switch ring networks, are analyzed, and then the performance of the networks introduced previously are compared so that a conclusion about their both advantages and disadvantages can be drew at last. Then based on the introduction of Resilient Packet Ring, a new ring topological Optical Burst Switch network model using the dual ring is proposed. This new network architecture has the advantages of both Optical Burst Switch and Resilient Packet Ring, such as statistical bandwidth multiplexing, relaxed hardware requirement, robust, simplexes, and so on. Nodes in this ring use limited length fiber delay line whose length is a little longer than the maximum length of burst to avoid burst contention. This solution can get very high efficiency of bandwidth and very low burst loss rate.As analyzed and illustrated in this paper, this new network model is suitable in both Metropolitan Area Network and Wide Area Network.
