IBM Mainframe is one of the biggest commercial server systems which are used for data concentration processing of enterprise since the introduction in 1964. It is playing a key role in the field of Bank, Aerialness, Telecommunication and Oil as it's excellent Reliability,Availability and Serviceability. These enterprises request the system to provide the long time uninterrupted service. In the productive environment, couples of important application systems run on ZOS, so the upgrade and restart will be restricted strictly. But in the testing environment, main tasks consist of function testing and production upgrade for both operating system and application system. And the system restart is mandatory for these tasks completion. However, multiple system restarts in urgent situation are not convenient as every restart will takes about 3 hours.According to the history of testing system running, the failed system restart is always occurred by the error of one of the subsystems. It will spend lots of time if we restart the whole system. So this thesis designs and implements the MINI-ZOS operating system for fast restart by reducing some application subsystems.Firstly, this thesis analyses the restart processing, system structure and main system datasets in details. And then, based on the system tailoring technology for the open platform, MINI-ZOS is designed by doing the tailor, customization and testing. Lastly, system restart and user logon have been tested successfully. The project result indicated this system can be effectively used in the testing environment.
