A Study On Pragmatics Of Talk-show Compere Language

Comperes are characterized by both public communication and interpersonal communication, and their language is different from daily communicative language. So far, domestic study on compere language have still been skimming the surface of expression and deeper research involving language's ontic problem stays so few. Talk-show comperes are the most special one among all for their unique character of both communication and disseminator role. Their communication character is strongly volatile. As the disseminators, their roles are multiple, as the information spreaders, they have to face different information takers. Therefore, talk-show compere language is different from not only daily communicative language but also those who don't host talk-show. Analysis and summary on the particularity and then listing requirements for talk-show comperes language are meaningful to their practice and development of talk-show. First, this paper gives an analysis on the differences between talk-show comperes' verbal communication activity and daily verbal communication activity from communication feature's perspective. We start with talk-show comperes' double communication backgrounds, pointing out that they are characterized by both public communication and interpersonal communication, and their communication activity combines public communication activity and interpersonal communication activity. Then, according to a comparison sheet which shows talk-show comperes' communication features, public communication features and interpersonal communication features, we make a generalization that verbal activity of compere language is featured by "compatibility of communication features", "multeity and multi-layer of disseminator's role" and "multi-layer of audience object". Meanwhile, we conclude that the particularity of communication features determine the particularity of pragmatics features in some degree and the particularity of pragmatics features makes some requirements for the language itself. Therefore, in the next chapter, we focus on the particularity of talk-show compere language's pragmatics features and the detailed requirements that the particularity brings out. We begin the discussion from language situation, conversation structure and conversation principles, then we sum up pragmatics features from the three perspective. On language situation, we discover that talk-show compere language's language situation is multidimensional. The system of talk-show compere language communication activity includes seven factors which are compere, guests, audiences, public communication audiences, program itself, communication media and the society. Talk-show compere language is used in the multidimensional language situation composed by the host and other six system factors. The multidimensional feature is shaped as a result of public communication environment and interpersonal communication environment of talk-show comperes. Every dimension space environment restricts talk-show compere language. Thereby, talk-show compere language has to be clear, not quirkish, it has to be normative, dramatic and low-redundant, it should involve measurement, assumption, adaptation and implicit attack, it has to be "significance-combining" and "switch-by-role" and at the same time, it should satisfy some demands of interpersonal communicative language. On conversation structure, the talk-show compere, guests and audiences are familiar, yet strange. As a result, the beginning, end and process of the conversation are totally different from the conversation structure of daily speech communication. First, talk-show conversation occasion is formal and assured. Second, conversation participant status is particular. Talk-show conversation consists of the host, guests and audiences, conversation position is lower one by one, the host has unrivaled control power and leadership for turn-taking. Third, subsidiary topic's changing is limited. Talk-show conversation begins with central topic, the host changes the topic according to the program aim, achieve the conversation goal by subsidiary topics. Forth, conversation is projected. Talk-show conversation procedures and the host's asking is prepared in advance, which leads to that the host language have to be mighty manipulative. At the end of the conversation, it should be wrapup and last. On conversation principles, conversation that goes along well profit from that participant obeys some kind of basic rules. These rules make both conversation sides marry up. Talk-show compere's verbal communication activity belongs to interpersonal communication. Hence the conversation principles should follow daily communicative language principles. While at the same time, talk-show compere, as the spokesman of the communication media, his verbal communication activity is characterized by double features. We conclude special conversation principles that talk-show compere has to follow, which are the role principle, the effect principle, the harmoniousness principle and the joviality principle. In addition, one of the greatest attributes of talk-show conversation is that the host and the participants are unequal. Therefore, they take advantage of different tactics to protect themselves. However, the host intends to violate some principles to achieve the program goal, and that, is what we call pragmatics tactics. Some of the common conversation tactics are violating the conversation quality rule, violating the conversation quantity rule and violation the related rule, which make host language adaptive, seditious and erotogenic. This paper is based on analysis on pragmatics features of talk-show compere language, generalizes requirements that special pragmatics features brings out. I wish it would help talk-show practice.
