In recent years, P2P becomes a popular technology which gets more and more people's attention. P2P is a distributed network. The participants who access the network share part of their hardware resources (processing ability, storing ability, network accessing ability, printers and so on). These resources require the network to provide service and content and they must be accessed by peer without middle entities. The participants in the network are not only the resources (service and content) provider (Server) but also the resources (service and content) gainer (Client).This paper first gives an overview on P2P technology and compares it with the traditional Client/Server model. With the comparison we realize the advantages of P2P technology. And then we give an introduction to three topologies which are in common use in P2P network. We describe the structure of these topologies in detail and give a comparison of them.And then we give an introduction to the network simulation and describe the network simulation software OPNET in detail. OPNET is a powerful network simulation software. We can build network model easily with its model library and develop our model based on our requirement. With this software, we have a simulation of the three topologies of P2P network and give a comparison of the simulation results.Finally, this paper summarizes the research and looks forward to the next research direction.
