H.264 standard is developed by the Joint Video Team, a collaborative effort of both VCEG and MPEG, making it possible to publish the final standard under the joint of ISO/IEC (as MPEG-4 PART 10 or Advanced Video Codec) and ITU-T (as Recommendation H.264). Under the same quality of the reconstructed image, if H.264 standard is adopted, about 50% bit rates can be saved in comparison with that if H.263 is applied. In view of its outstanding compression performance and robustness to IP and wireless network, it has been used in many fields, such as the digital video communication and digital video storageIn this thesis, the development and principle of the video code are introduced at first. Then the character and strcucture of the H.264/AVC standard is described. Furthermore, a novel fast algorithm for intra prediction is proposed by virtue of the integer transform. Secondly, the feature and interface of DM642 digital signal processor (DSP) are given. Finally, by referring to the testing model program JM, some modification has been done and an encoder implied with baseline profile of H.264 is designed with ANSI C. Based on this encoder, the interface of the video data is developed according to the feature of DM642, which made the soft encoder execute the video compression in real hardware platform. Then the optimization on the algorithm and program are carried out respectively in order to improve the speed of the H.264 encoder. Experimental results verify the encoder has a better performance after optimization.
