Digital image processing is widely applied in the field of biomedicine,material,remote sensing,communication,traffic control,military,document processing and industry. Digital image pre-processing is a part of digital image processing, which hold a significant position in all areas of image processing. Image enhancement, including image smooth and sharpening, is the most useful algorithm for image pre-processing.Because of the characteristics of digital image, digital image processing is very complicated and needs a large quantity of operations, and software realization would not satisfy the requirements of real-time system. So, it is very significant to design and realize a fast algorithm for digital image pre-processing.In this paper, we introduce development and applicant of image processing, and we also introduce some basic knowledge about digital image processing, System C language, method and flow of system level design. And what is more important is that we design a new improved algorithm for color image pre-processing based on HSI color space, and implement the system with hardware according the new algorithm. The new algorithm can reduce the quantity of operation for color image template convolution and promote the performance of the system. Furthermore, we also develop the structure for a FIFO group and hardware pipeline which can speed up the template operation.At the end of the paper, we analyze the advantage and disadvantage of the algorithm and problems occurred in the system design in detail. And we also advise the direction for further research.
