IEEE1394 is a standard for a high performance serial bus, with small cubage, low cost, high-speed transmission, and isochroous or asynchronous transmission. IEEE1394 is widely used in the multimedia field. Comparing with traditional analog video monitoring, Video Monitoring System based on 1394 digital camera has much superiority as its simple configuration, high reliability, low cost, high image quality and safe storage. Also, it can be searched and installed quickly and easily. This system is mostly used in research and study, producing industry and microscopy applications.The design and realization of Video Monitoring System based 1394 digital camera are described in the paper, the system uses the advanced 1394 interfacial technology and advanced video equipment——IEEE1394 uncompressed digital video camera as image data acquisition device. During software development, the Object-Oriented programming method is adopted, the system is modeled by UML, and use case diagram, sequence diagram, class diagram, statechart diagram and component diagram are given. The system selects VC++ as development tool, utilizes the feature of multi-task Operating System Windows, adopts multi-thread technology and windows message mechanism, achieves to control more than one camera, to save active bitmap, and to control cameras automatically.Comparing with usual digital video monitoring system, the superior features of the system are as follows: (1) Simper configuration and lower cost. Only one PC is able to control several cameras. (2) High image quality. Using the high-speed 1394 bus guarantees high quality image by uncompressed digital video data to PC. (3) The particular feature of parsing script file and controlling cameras automatically. The function simplifies the operation, gains the accuracy and can be operated without monitor.
