Next generation wireless communications is required to provide mobile multimedia services with credible quality and high transmission speed. Because of its performance in frequency efficiency, multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) has been under intensive research in recent years.The main advantage of MIMO is offering multiplexing gain and diversity gain, based on which the basic principle and algorithms of MIMO technologies are studied in this dissertation. Simulation result also gave to prove the analysis.It has been proved that space multiplex can significantly enhance channel capacity and space diversity can increase system reliability. Channel capacity and space diversity are firstly studied. Secondly, based on transmission diversity and receiver diversity, different methods have been studied. Space time block coding and beamforming at transmitter have been compared. Moreover, detection algorithms in a layered space time coding system including maximum likelihood detection, line detection and successive interference cancellation have been analyzed. Finally, MIMO technology for next generation mobile system with the use of other technologies such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), Turbo coding and link adaptation is analyzed. According to the simulation, some suggestions are given.
