H.264/AVC is the most recent international standard of video compression, designed by ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG. In the latest years, thanks to the great efforts paid by professors and engineers, H.264 has been introduced into practical applications. Compared with other former standards, H.264 has incomparable advantage in the compression rate, video quality and the robust network stream. However, the complexity of H.264 is also greatly increased, so that it's so difficult for engineers to use H.264 in an application during the first few years after the standard was introduced. This paper is focused on the implementation of H.264 real-time encoder, give some optimized algorithms for the hardware platform and the standard itself, moreover, the paper gives a demo system composed of video capture, encode, and transfer. The whole paper is composed of following contents: First of all, the paper gives the history and current development of H.264 as well as the analysis on the features of H.264. Afterwards, the solutions of H.264 encoder on all kinds of platforms are presented, and the advantage of DSP platform is given. The algorithm flow of X264 open source encoder is then analyzed, which is partitioned into four layers– sequence group, sequence, frame and slice, macroblock. The main partition of algorithm to be optimized is decided based on the computation complexity analysis. For increasing the encoding speed while maintaining the video quality, several original optimized algorithms on SKIP mode, subpixel motion estimation, and inter/intra mode decision are introduced in the encoder. In addition, a lot of optimization work is done based on the DSP hardware architecture, eventually the encoder can work at CIF@40fps, 2CIF@20fps. Besides, a demo system including the video capture and network transfer is...
