Virtual Maintenance training is the application of Virtual Reality technologies in maintenance engineering. It possesses important meaning for maintenance training of high-tech and new equipments. The research work in this paper emphasizes on the unitary solution and key technologies of Virtual Maintenance training system for equipments.Firstly the current research methods on Virtual Maintenance are discussed and their merits and disadvantages are analyzed. Then an idea of storing the maintenance process before maintenance training is proposed while the maintenance process is described by a status transformation series.Secondly the methods of developing Virtual Maintenance system on OpenGL Performer platform are discussed. The virtual scenario organization and optimizing methods are researched for the virtual maintenance scenario after analyzing its characteristics. This paper proposes an algorithm of integrating the collision detection library RAPID into OpenGL Performer's ISEC process and validates it. Furthermore the non-convex collision detection algorithm is introduced for the future development. Then the method of using mouse and keyboard for virtual maintenance operations is stated which defines the motion model separately for them.Thirdly this paper proposes a new method describing the virtual maintenance process. This method brings up concept of active object based on the space partition in virtual maintenance scenario and describes active object's inner status using Finite State Machine. Based on these the virtual maintenance process is described by a state transformation series. Furthermore this paper researches the implementation methods for real time system responses including the real time inspection on user actions and the real time instructing in maintenance process.At last the Virtual Maintenance prototype system is designed and implemented and proves an excellent effect.
