The embedded system has been applied widely to many domains involving military, industry and personal life. The complexity of embedded system is growing up as well as the requirement of inter-operation ability between embedded system and non-embedded system. Embedded operating system becomes a basic part of embedded software development. It plays an important role for supporting multitask and lowering the difficulty of embedded software development. And it has important effects on integral function, maintainability and interactivity of embedded system.First, this paper describes the present situation of embedded operating system and categorizes these embedded operating systems from several views. The hot points of embedded operating system are introduced. The selected topics basis is proposed based on it. After the architectural methods of building a distributed operating system are concluded, a building method and architecture are proposed. From the perspective of providing distributed services, the high level services of embedded distributed operating system are divided into several parts. And, it is the main contents of this paper. The division is based on the distributed theories and some specific purposes of embedded system. In general, there are four parts, i.e., inter-processes communication, code mobility, naming service and device management. The detailed analyses for these services are performed and their purposes and functions are concluded in embedded system. For quantitative analyzing the system function, some important services are implemented. Finally, some advanced purposes in distributed system are prospected to supply some advices for the further research.
