Quality Analysis And Improving Strategy For English Editing Of Chinese Core Journals Of Sports

Currently, quality of English editing for Chinese core sports journals is in a low level, which is becoming a main obstacle to Chinese core sports journals'internationalization. This study systematically probed into problems of English editing of Chinese core sports journals based on characteristics of science and technology English, relevant methods and regulations for journals'English editing, adopting all issues of 9 core journals of sports published in the year 2010 as the sample. The result reveals: there exist a series of problems in standardization of editing and typesetting, uniformity of Chinese with English, and accuracy, conciseness and fitness of English.1) Translation for names of university and college, and the word"体育"in the title of journals is in a mass. Meanwhile translation for some journal's titles is not proper.2) There exist a series of problems in format's unity, marking's completeness, translation's reasonableness, internal consistency and congruity with Chinese and English when copyright information of copyright page is published on journals.3) There exist problems of syntax errors, inaccuracy for terminology translation, inconsistence with Chinese and English, long and cumbersome titles and nonstandard names'spelling with section names, article titles, and authors'name of English Content page.4) Details of authors'English address is lacked, and translation and marking for units'name of the authors is nonstandard.5) There exist a series of problems of the application of grammar, collocation, correspondence with Chinese and English, spelling, word capitalization, punctuation, etc. for English abstract.6) English key words is not unified with Chinese ones, some grammar errors, inappropriate translation of technical terms, and the recording format confusion occur with English keywords.7) Titles of charts in Chinese and English is inconsistent, and the title is too complicated.8) English reference is not standard on English names'marking; different types of references do not meet national standards in bibliographic entries of titles, versions, publication issues, etc.Causes of the problems of English editing for Chinese core sports journals: 1) there is a lack of national standards, and amendment for relevant standards is not timely. 2) The editorial department does not attach importance on journal's English editing. 3) The evaluating reviewers ignored the inspection for English part of the journal. 4) the authors do not pay enough attention on the English part of a paper. 5) English editors lack of profession qualities and sense of responsibility. 6) Quality of editing process of Chinese part is not in a high level, and meanwhile there is lack of communication for Chinese and English editors.Quality control strategies for Sports Core journals'editing: 1) Make and update national standards as soon as possible, and develop appropriate internal disciplinary norms. 2) Reform journals with a marketing model; participate in domestic and overseas competition. 3) Make the duty for evaluating experts and author respectively in the editing of English part. 4) English editor should continue to enhance professional quality and strengthen the sense of responsibility. 5) Improve the quality of Chinese editing, and strength communication between Chinese editors and English editors.
