It’s unbelievable that the trend of simplicity and fashion which was famous in the Yuan Dynasty was replaced by the reasonable passion and complicated peace. Wang Meng hovered between being an official and being a hermit all through his life. His works were not only the dramatic change of the style of art history, but also the interpretation of his contradictory ideas.This article analyses the style of painting of Wang Meng in different periods to reflect his spirit. Wang Meng lived in the turbulence at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. He was attracted toward the hermit just because he was fond of landscape.As the catalyst, the turbulent situation speeded up the change. Wang Meng lived in the restless all through his life either he was an official or a hermit. The pair of irreconcilable antinomy in his heart was his hard feeling for the achievement of the traditional value of artist and his desire for the rural life. Although he lived a rural life, he was concerned about the world outside. Lin Zan spent all his money to enjoy being a hermit, but Wang Meng couldn’t. What he concerned about was the reality, and the hermit was needed in spirit. Ni Zan attached importance to the attitude and integrity of the scholar. The conception of hermit was a spot on the line which was split up suddenly.The complicated emotional experience which reflected the complicated attitude, derived from the contradiction. His masterpieces such as Retreat in the Qinbian Mountains, Living in the Mountains during the Summer, Linwu Cave in the Taihu Lake, Taibai Mountain, Island of Pengying of the East China Sea, Removal of Ge Zhichuan, reflected the turbulent emotion and the pursue of aloofness. |
